Winter

Winter

Winter is the season of hot chocolates, beanies and puffer jackets but also has the problem of dryness, frizz and hair loss.

Reasons for Hair loss:
Typically every day you lose from 50-100 strands a day but it can be altered with a change of diet, seasons, hormones, or medication.
Humidity: In the winter months humidity levels drop which makes your skin feel dry, cracked and flakey. Your skin loses 25% of its ability to hold in moisture during the cool months which does not help with hair fall.
Hot showers: The best thing when you have had a long hard day is letting yourself relax in a nice hot shower but unfortunately that can accelerate hair loss as it dries out the scalp.
Diet: Eating healthy and nutritious foods is the last thing you want to do when it is a cold and dreary day but it can result in losing hair. Eating lots of sugar reduces your body’s capability to absorb proteins. Eating a vegan diet can also cause a lack of proteins as you don’t get the nutrients you need to for fill your needs.
Heater: Using air conditioner or heaters can dry out the skin and scalp by evaporation the natural oils from it.

Reasons for Dryness:
Hair care: If you are using the wrong hair care for your hair it can result in dry hair
Chemicals: Using harsh chemicals on the scalp can cause the hair to become dry and brittle with time, this can include colouring, perming, and bleaching.
Mechanical Damage: This can be caused by heated tools eg. Hairdryer, straighteners or curlers.
Internal: There are multiple reasons for dryness effected by internal causes most of the common ones is Stress, an irregular metabolism, unbalanced hormone levels, genetics and the natural aging process. As you get older it is more likely to get a dryer scalp and that can cause dandruff, or a dry and itchy scalp.

Reasons for Frizz:
Hair care: The use of a shampoo and/or conditioner that is not suited to your hair can result in dryness that encourages frizz.
Moisture: Through the rainy months there is no doubt that your hair gets exposed to water and some humidity which does not help with frizz.
Brushing: Curly hair is not able to be brushed once it is dry as it aggravates the curls causing it to become unruly.
Chemicals: Using products used for colouring, bleaching, perming and sometimes straightening can encourage the hair to become frizzy and a pain.

Some solutions to these problems caused by winter in adding a cool rinse after using a mask or conditioner will help take out the excess product but not strip the hair from all the nutrients it needs to keep in the moisture. Leaving on a mask (most commonly the Systems professional Hydration mask) for 5 minutes or overnight once a week helps prevent dryness. Reducing how often your hair is being tied up can also help as the tension from the hair tie causes gradual breakage to the hair, especially while it is wet.
